Cydarm has joined the Open Cyber Security Alliance, along with IBM, McAfee, and 16 other companies, to address the fragmentation and interoperability problems existing in the current cybersecurity solutions being offered.

As cyber threats have become frequent and complex, the solutions offered by the industry have grown significantly in quantity and variety, but have often added to the complexity for security specialists to use.

According to studies by a number of research organisations including the Ponemon Institute, an average large enterprise could deploy over 40 cybersecurity products – and managing, monitoring and achieving return on investment is becoming more difficult.

Last year a number of key cybersecurity firms formed the Open Cybersecurity Alliance (OCA) to address the  connectivity of solutions including the need to improve interoperability and data-sharing practices.

Since its inception, each participating security company has contributed cybersecurity resources in a bid to “develop open source security technologies which can freely exchange information, insights, analytics, and orchestrated responses.”

OCA has focused on the development of open source content, code, tooling, practices, and patterns for improving the interoperability of cybersecurity solutions. In addition, the firms have worked to improve information sharing across vendors and their product lines.

OCA is also encouraging Governments and industry to adopt “open source options” to improve the integration of standalone products more effectively, to increase their cyber security performance, address the reduction of vendor lock-in, and increase data sharing.

“Today, organizations struggle without a standard language when sharing data between products and tools,” said Carol Geyer, chief development officer of OASIS. “We have seen efforts emerge to foster data exchange, but what has been missing is the ability for each tool to transmit and receive these messages in a standardized format, resulting in more expensive and time-consuming integration costs. The aim of the OCA is to accelerate the open sharing concept making it easier for enterprises to manage and operate.”
